Fabrics for Camping/Hiking

Cotton -- Good for warm, dry weather camping. It's comfortable, lightweight

and it keeps you cool. However, it takes a long time to dry and is a

bad insulator in cold weather. Once it's wet, it will not keep you warm

and should be avoided in colder months.

Wool ---  Great for colder weather. Wool is a great natural insulator and can keep

you warm even when damp. It might be somewhat scratchy, so it helps

                 to wear something underneath.

Synthetics -- Many synthetics offer the comfort of cotton and the warmth of wool.

They are comfortable, warm (even when wet), fast drying and lightweight.

Polypropylene, pile/fleece and other modern, man-made insulating materials

are available in long underwear, sweaters, vests, parkas, mittens and hats.
